“I’m delighted to have this wonderful collection of truly pocket-sized pieces of Leaves of Grass. … An ambitious (and successful) project. I look forward to spending time with it in coming days.” — Ed Folsom, editor of Walt Whitman Quarterly Review

“I’ve personally tested each booklet in the series, considering myself a good case. I have poor eyesight and I rarely carry a handbag. The booklets worked for me on both legibility and pocket portability. The pocket edition holds another unexpected good, at least for me. Maybe it was the physical intimacy of a book that fit well in my hands, but I found that the poems—even those I’d been reluctant to read closely before—flowed more easily into my thoughts and spirit.” — Jean Huets, editor

Pocket LEAVES OF GRASS

“I shall never be set at rest till we have Leaves of Grass in such little volumes—Song of Myself in one—and so on.” — Horace Traubel to Walt Whitman (from With Walt Whitman in Camden

The Circling Rivers Pocket Edition of the complete Leaves of Grass is issued just as Walt Whitman’s close friend wished: a set of “little volumes.” Each volume can fit in a jacket pocket, the back pocket of a pair of jeans, or even in an elegant evening bag.

Next to maintaining the integrity of the text, the primary considerations for this pocket edition were physical convenience and legibility. The typeface is Janson, a strong, legible text that happens also to resemble the typeface Walt chose for the Leaves published in his lifetime. A pale gray paper allows for use of the thinnest paper possible with no show-through from each side of the page.
